The first international airplane flight occurred when French Aviator Louis Bleriot took off from Les Baraques,near Calais,France. He landed in Dover, England. Bleriot accomplished this feat in a 28 horse-power monoplane. Before taking off, Bleriot allegedly asked from the cockpit, "Where is England?". Where is Picotechnology?, you might ask were you a scientist in the "weird science" realm of Pico and Femto Technology today.This rapidly advancing field as of yet has few working applications.The current efforts in research are centered on support for the furthering of Nanotechnology . While Nanotechnology will certainly help us here on Earth, easing pressure on strained resources, increasing intelligence, and creating infinite health. The TRUE MAGIC of the future will come from deep inside the Femto World. Discoveries such as endless supplies of non-polluting energy, faster-than-light travel, instantaneous transportation, time travel, dimensional travel, direct-to-mind virtual worlds, mind to mind direct transfers of knowledge, and inventions we can't even imagine at this point are all within this area of research. We are at a similar point in this science as protein research was 100yrs ago. Those scientist were well aware that proteins existed and had functions, but as yet could not determine what they might possible be. Today we are all knowledgable of the many valuable uses of proteins. The science of Femtotechnology is still at a point where one person who is really good at abstract mathematical thinking could quite literally unravel the secrets of the universe in his livingroom. How much longer will we be at this point is anyones guess, but I think in not more than 10yrs the beginning foundations for rapid developement in this field will have already been laid.The rate at which useful knowledge doubles is an exponential object. Sometime before the year 2010 that rate will be every year and between 2010 and 2011 the rate at which useful knowledge doubles will be every hour. How fast will the rate of change be then ? How much sooner will we achieve dramatic improvements to life on Earth ? The problem with the field of Femtotechnology is it is hard to rush a break-through in coherent physics theorem. A theorem that can be built-on-to in the third dimension. The break-through-theorem-people are like the great artists of the 1400s. The best you can do for them, once you discover them, is to become a patron, provide them with plenty of chalk boards and chalk, and only a light work load as a minor distraction and let them go. This is because those theorist are driven by their work not unlike Charleston Heston in the Agony And The Ecstacy. They paint mental pictures not unlike the Sistene Chapel ceiling. Only those who can visualize such Masterpieces will be allowed into the show. The fact that no useful applications exists at present should not discourage anyone at this point, now I know some will argue that nuclear bombs and energy have been useful. To this argument I would say, these applications have been useful in keeping the science alive, but if you check out the amount of over-spending in the Defense budget during the Cold War it would equal the National Debt, and if you consider what its going to cost to dispose of spent fissionable material from nuclear power plants, you would not now or ever say that our efforts in the sub-atomic area have been profitable. In fact, up to now, our efforts have represented the most costly endeavor in the history of mankind with only, nuclear bombs which nobody in their right mind (except those few dictatorships and pseudo-democracies) want, nuclear power plants (with unforeseen and undisclosed costs), and a few medical treatments (which I am sure future generations will see as butchery and barberism) being the only visible out-growths. The BIG saving grace for Femtoscience (not to be mistaken for Femto-Second Science) is that one viable non-polluting application on this level could mean more wealth, more enpowerment for the common man, then has ever existed. Whether it be Computing On The Atomic Scale (COTAS), or Unlimited-Relatively-Free-Energy (URFE), or direct to mind transfers of knowledge: either machine to person, or person to person, any of these developements would mean an end to life as we knew it, and the beginning of a new era, with unimaginable aspects. The thoughts we could think with our brains enhanced 10 times, nay, 100 times and the ability to transfer those thoughts complete by touching hands (Here: "Share your thoughts with us" takes on new meaning) would change us forever. Unlimited-Relatively-Free-Energy (URFE) means running 1000 homes on what it costs to run 1 now. It means the energy aspect (Which can be computed) of any product would be 1000 times cheaper. Computing-On-The-Atomic-Scale (COTAS) means that all materials except lets say high impact-materials (the head of a hammer, etc.) become extremely user-friendly literally responding to our every whims. Food that prepares itself when we want as we like it out of seemingly non-associated basic materials, houses that prepare, repair, maintain themselves responding to our thought, vehicles that take us where we want to go much like Magic Carpets, on the spot reprogrammable DNA, and with nanotechnology's everlasting health we would have alot more time to enjoy it all. Is there a fly in the ointment ? Well with that kind of power, one rebellious act, or anti-social behaviorism might find you executed, or reprogrammed, or on your way to a distant star, and with all the new found freedoms for people to enjoy the rebellious might not find much sympathy. Now in passing the torch to you (so to speak), you might ask: "What can I do ?" or "Why should I care ?" . The answers are respectively, "much" and "you should". First, you can let your representative in Washington know that your interested in developements in this field and that you think that the advantages would outway the costs and for the second part, that you would be mortified and afraid for our future if some dictatorship saw advances in this field before we did. In closing, I feel that our future will remain bright as long as we are bright enough to forge ahead. Peace To All.
